HUMAN WITH ‘CAT EYES’

Nong You Hui

His name is Nong You-hui from China. When he was born, his eyes were so vibrant in color that his parents were alarmed. Doctors told the parents not to worry — they should darken in time and become more like normal dark-colored eyes of all Chinese children.

This never happened. But because You-hui didn’t seem to have any vision problems, his parents soon figured everything was normal.

Upon entering school, one of You-hui’s teachers noticed that he had trouble playing with the other school children in direct sunlight. The teacher later overheard the school children saying that You-hui could see in the dark. Curious, he invited You-Hui to help him collect crickets in the dark, and was amazed to observe the boy catching them without needing a flashlight.

There were reports of Nong You-hui’s night-time vision in 2009. At that time, You-hui’s father had taken him to the hospital to have his eyes checked. He was worried that his son had impaired vision, or a disability making him overly sensitive to daylight.

Doctors confirmed that You-hui’s vision was fine, and sensitivity to sunlight isn’t anything that should create serious problems. Only direct sunlight appears to give You-hui difficulty.

Medical tests have since been conducted that show You-hui can read perfectly in the dark, and he sees as clearly at night as most people do during the day.

Experts believe that You-hui was born with a condition that leaves less protection for your eyes and make them more sensitive to light. So this isn’t a “cat-like” genetic mutation, and You-hui isn’t an alien.
